Young Roots External Evaluation 2022-25

The past few years have been a time of huge change for young people seeking safety in the UK, and for the organisations supporting them. During this period, young people have been navigating an increasingly difficult environment shaped by policies like the Illegal Migration Act, the Rwanda Scheme, alongside harmful narratives.

We invited an independent evaluator to take a close look at our work so we could understand the difference we’ve made during this period and what young people need most from us now.

A key part of the evaluation was making sure young people were at the heart of it. They worked closely with the evaluator to co-design a questionnaire, shaping the questions based on what matters to them. Young people also shared their experiences at our youth clubs, where they could speak openly in a space that feels familiar and safe. Many told us that Young Roots has been a steady and trusted place for them, that is much needed. 72% of young people said that they do not know anywhere else offering the kind of support they find here. The findings highlight how important it is for young people to have safe, welcoming spaces where they feel understood and supported.

“Young Roots were the first group who helped me. Before, I didn’t want to speak to anyone. But they showed me how to be sociable with others again. They have helped me to know there is help and support and people who really care.”

Alongside young people, the evaluator spoke with partners, funders and staff to understand how Young Roots’ support is experienced across the sector. Their reflections echoed what young people told us: 100% of stakeholders strongly agreed that Young Roots helps reduce loneliness and isolation.

Many described Young Roots as an exemplary, sector-leading service. They highlighted the strength of relationships with young people, our youth-led and trauma‑informed approach, and the consistency of support — especially for those arriving in the UK and living in temporary accommodation. Funders and partners shared strong confidence in Young Roots and in the way we work, reinforcing the value of long-term, trusted support during times of uncertainty.

“Young Roots is a safe haven in a stressful life. They motivate us, are really good at advising us, and are reliable in our stressful times. An accepting community but where we can also have privacy. The team help ground me. They are close to me and feel like my family. There are memories from Young Roots that will stay with me forever and will always help carry me forward.”

We’d like to say a huge thank you to every young person, partner, funder, and staff member who took part in the evaluation — your time, honesty and ideas have been invaluable and are deeply appreciated. These findings will help us strengthen the spaces and services young people rely on, so we can continue being a trusted presence as needs change.
