Has your MP spoken out against the government’s cruel asylum plans?

This week, the Home Secretary has announced yet more asylum policies – and these are the cruelest yet.

The government is playing a dangerous political game – in an attempt to win over Reform voters (which won’t work) they are damaging our society and trying to pit our communities against each other.  We want better from our political leaders – and now is the time to tell them.

The Home Secretary, Shabana Mahmood, has set out plans to grant just 30 months’ leave to remain to recognised refugees, which would cause enormous uncertainty and prevent people from being able to rebuild their lives (as well as creating an entirely unmanageable amount of extra work for the already failing Home Office). The proposals also include limiting family reunion, removing the state’s duty to provide support to someone who is destitute, reducing people’s access to justice, and limiting safe routes to those who meet work or study requirements (a complete subversion of the principle of refugee protection, which must be provided to those in danger, not just those who meet a country’s economic criteria.)

At Young Roots, we know what young people need to rebuild their lives, to feel safe, to take part in and feel welcome in our society. And it’s not this. Refugees and asylum-seekers – like all of us - need stability and a feeling of belonging in order to flourish.

We know there’s so many of us who want a better society than the one being offered by our government. We also know that lots of MPs are deeply unhappy with these plans ... and you can play a vital role in encouraging them to speak out.

Please write to your MP NOW and urge them to speak out, to the Home Secretary and to the public, against these asylum plans. You can find the contact details of your MP here:
